Questionnaire 3

WellBeing Room

This questionnaire I produced solely to be distributed in the WellBeing centre, as I wanted to gather thoughts directly from the students who visit the space. As this space is based in Clifton, I created a printed version of the questionnaire so that I could leave them in the space over a period of time. Once I obtained the approval from the Coordinating chaplain Richard Davey, the print-outs were placed in a clearly marked envelope in the main room, with a kind message asking students to complete the questionnaire.

On this occasion, the questions were very specific to users of the room. Personally, I did not know much about the WellBeing centre, so I used open-ended questions that would hopefully prompt students to write as much information as possible in the comment boxes. The main concern with this exercise was the fact that there would be nobody there to prompt people to fill in the survey, so it was relying on each individual’s goodwill. Also, to my knowledge, the space is not very well known so obtaining a large amount of responses would be extremely difficult… however, I very much wanted to reach out to these students as a source of primary research.

What I wanted to find out from this:

  • Do students use this space regularly?

  • What do they use it for?

  • How does it make them feel?

  • How beneficial is the space?

  • Very much! It would help all stressed students and create a great community

  • Every student should have access to services that can help manage stress & promote wellbeing

  • A space away from areas of work and noise

  • City is much more busy and they don’t have a space like this.

  •  Some of them are coming HERE to use ours. I was surprised that they did not have this provision already

  • It is a useful place for students

  • It works really well for Clifton, so City and Brack should be able to enjoy a similar experience

  • They would benefit from the space to have time out

  • Nice place to relax, forget your troubles

  • It’s a nice place

  • These are students who may have similar experiences in regards to those in Clifton

  • It's helpful

  • It's nice to have somewhere where you don't feel obligated to buy something or to do work (library) - Nice social area

  • Relaxing. Essential for a stressful student

Q3 analysis

Questionnaire Analysis

This survey was carried out over the last two weeks of term 1 (Nov/Dec 2014) though it was left in the room over the Christmas holidays and open for responses till mid-January 2015. Responses were all from NTU students, predominantly aged between 18 & 25.

The general outcome of the survey showed me that everyone who visits the centre has a very positive response to it, and there seem to be no negative comments.

Almost 75% of those who took part in the survey said they visited the centre regularly - once or twice a week. When asked what they go there to do, not many people reported to visit the centre with the intention of praying/meditating, but almost 75% said they went to socialise with friends and/or meet new people. This tells me the space is mostly used for its sociable aspect, and that the ‘quiet & prayer rooms’ provided are used far less than the main wellbeing room.  However, over 50% of respondents also said they visited the centre to de-stress/breathe. This shows me that these people enjoy the company of others when they’re looking to de-stress, as opposed to a quiet room to be alone.

When asked how the space made them feel, the responses were all positive, but the most frequently used words were: Welcomed, Relaxed and Calm. These are shown in a hierarchy format in the image below, where smaller words were used less-often.

When I visited the centre to collect the completed surveys, I spoke to a few people about why I was collating this research, and my intentions of designing something similar for the City campus. As reflected in the survey responses, the people I spoke to all agreed that there is definitely a need for such a space, as they were quite surprised to hear it was not already provided on other campuses. It was generally agreed on the fact that every student deserves to have access to a comfortable space in which they can reduce their level of stress and where support for wellbeing is provided.

In conclusion, the results of my questionnaires at this point have supported my original hypothesis: A space for students to breathe and de-stress is needed in the city location, in addition to the counselling services which are currently provided.
